CALL FOR PROJEKTTEAM: Hashomer Hatzair Geschichtsprojekt 2022

Hashomer Hatzair is one of the oldest, still existing Jewish youth movement in the world. Until 1938, Hashomer Hatzair was active in several cities in Germany. In 2022, ten years after the official re-establishment of the youth movement in Berlin, we would like to bring together the new, young generation of our movement in a search for traces and memories of the earlier generation of Hashomer Hatzair. A search that will take us back to Berlin in the 1930s to discover the untold stories and forgotten fates of the members of our movement, whose existence was so abruptly ended by Nazism.

We are looking for 8 PROJECT TEAM MEMBERS (ages 18-99) to escort our intergenerational project, especially on its research phase on the first half of 2022. We would like to find former members or witnesses who are still alive and/or get in touch with their families and descendants. We will collect information, but also seek personal items such as photographs, letters and diaries from that time, to be used to promote emotional exchange between the generations. This collection of stories and testimonies will be made available across associations and organisations for youth-specific and progressive educational work to inform about the life of Jewish youth in Berlin shortly before the beginning of the Second World War.

What does it require?

The project team will regularly meet every couple of weeks and work independently or in teams, in between meetings. A joint delegation to Israel in March 2022 is in the center of our work, where we will visit archives and research institutes, and meet families and organisations in public events and meetings. We are looking for project team members who can lead or assist with different tasks around this work, from research and archive work to public relations and writing, workshop leading and translations. This is a voluntary work.

ABOUT US
The non-profit organisation Hashomer Hatzair Deutschland (HHD) runs the secular, left Jewish youth movement that was re-established in Berlin in 2012. Since then, it has built a community of members to bring the values and passion of the youth movement back to Berlin. Currently Ken Berlin has 3 children’s and youth groups aged 8-21 who meet regularly and participate in annual camps, both nationally and internationally. The group sessions are planned and run by a team of young group leaders (guides) aged 16-21. ROSBOT, a sub-initiative, works on the development of materials for out-of-school education and circulates them through trainings for multipliers (18+).
